His journey to Bollywood began when he moved to Mumbai (then Bombay) on a scholarship from the Indian Embassy in Nepal to study classical music at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. His Bollywood debut was in 1980 with the film Unees-Bees , but success came after years of struggle. The turning point came in with the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (QSQT) and the song 'Papa Kehte Hain' , which earned him his first Filmfare Award and established him as a major playback singer.
