In the Season 8 episode "The One Where Rachel Tells...", a massive subplot was cut entirely from broadcast and streaming. In the uncut version, Chandler and Monica get detained by airport security because Chandler makes a joke about a sign warning against joking about bombs. This storyline was set to air right after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, so producers quickly pulled it and filmed a replacement story about them competing with another honeymooning couple.
When Warner Bros. released the series on DVD in the early 2000s, they rewarded fans by restoring this deleted footage. These "super-sized" or uncut episodes added anywhere from two to five minutes of extra content per episode. Cumulatively, this amounts to hours of original footage that never made it to broadcast. Despite this, many of the original edits remained in place, and it wasn't until the show's DVD release in 2005 that fans were able to see the full, uncut episodes. The DVD release included deleted scenes, bloopers, and other bonus features that gave fans a deeper look into the making of the show.
