Sexual orientation (who you are attracted to) and gender identity (who you are) are fundamentally different concepts. Melding them into a single political bloc has occasionally led to misunderstandings, where trans issues are mistakenly treated as secondary to gay and lesbian issues.

This distinction creates unique cultural artifacts. In traditional gay male culture, for instance, hypermasculinity (leather, bears, gym culture) is celebrated. For a trans man, navigating that space involves negotiating a body that may not align with cisgender expectations. Conversely, lesbian culture has historically been a sanctuary for female masculinity, yet trans men and non-binary people sometimes find themselves caught in debates about whether their identity "erases" lesbian spaces.

Much of what the world currently recognizes as mainstream LGBTQ+ culture—including slang, fashion, dance, and humor—originates directly from the historical trans and gender-nonconforming community, specifically Black and Latine trans individuals within the ballroom scene.
This ideology has created painful fractures. In the UK and parts of the US, some "Lesbian Bars" and feminist music festivals (like the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival) have historically barred trans women. This has led to a wave of trans-exclusive policies being met with fierce boycotts and the creation of "trans-inclusive" rival spaces.

Looking forward, the transgender community is pushing LGBTQ culture toward a more radical, less assimilationist future.
The tension is real, but the bond is deeper. Without the transgender community, LGBTQ culture loses its memory of radical resistance.
