Despite the explosion of short-form video, YouTube remains the most widely used platform among Gen Z. With 91% of Gen Z teens using YouTube, it serves as the go-to destination for long-form content, deep dives, and substantive viewing experiences. Whether it is documentary-style video essays, music videos, gaming walkthroughs, or educational content, YouTube occupies a unique position as the platform where teens turn when they want more than a fifteen-second dopamine hit.

The goal for parents, educators, and society is not to pull the plug but to equip sixteen-year-olds with the critical skills they need to navigate this complex ecosystem with confidence, agency, and well-being.

While older generations may still lean on text-heavy sites, 16-year-olds are almost entirely visual-first.
