The "Sell" button in Marvel Contest of Champions is a vestigial organ from a bygone era of the game. It serves no positive purpose for a modern Summoner.
In the champion's profile screen, you will find a "Sell" button. This is generally only available for champions you have duplicates of (2-star, 3-star, etc.), although sometimes lower-ranked, lower-starred champions can be sold regardless.
