The Portraits of Jennie series is regarded by enthusiasts as one of Rikitake's foundational long-form projects. Rather than capturing disparate models in single-session shoots, the series was structured as an extended, episodic visual study. Description
The series’ title is a direct reference to the 1940 novella Portrait of Jennie by the famous American writer Robert Nathan. The book tells the story of a struggling artist in New York during the Great Depression who meets a mysterious young girl named Jennie Appleton. She gradually becomes his muse and appears to be slipping through time, growing older each time they meet. The novel, which became a massive success for Nathan, was adapted into an atmospheric supernatural romance film in 1948, directed by William Dieterle and starring Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones. It is this film and the novel that provided the thematic core for Rikitake's masterwork. Portraits Of Jennie By Yasushi Rikitake.108
